The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and North Dakota-based Grand Farm came together Friday to break ground on the University of Georgia Grand Farm, an agriculture innovation partnership in Perry, Georgia.
Meet George Vellidis, director of the University of Georgia’s Institute for Integrative Precision Agriculture. UGA launched the institute in 2022 to leverage interdisciplinary faculty expertise and industry ties to advance this field. “As researchers, it’s easy for us to work as individuals to solve a particular task,” said Vellidis. “But when we work together to look at problems from different perspectives, we come up with optimal solutions for even bigger challenges.”
IIPA member, WenZhan Song is a 2025 recipient of the Lamar Dodd Research Creative Research Award.
This award is given to recognize an outstanding body of nationally and internationally recognized scholarly or creative activities in the sciences. Lamar Dodd’s artwork extended into the American West and even into space when he was commissioned by NASA and the Department of the Interior to creatively record numerous scientific achievements. His scientific artwork joined imagination and scientific reality. For this reason, the Lamar Dodd Award was established in 1981 in his honor.
“The conference focuses on developing strong private and public partnerships to advance precision agriculture in the Southeast,” said George Vellidis, UGA IIPA director. “The program offers a combination of industry and university presentations as well as networking opportunities.”
The University of Georgia Poultry Science Extension Team will proudly host the 2025 Georgia Precision Poultry Farming Conference virtually (via Zoom) on May 6, 2025.
This year’s conference will be the 5th annual Georgia Precision Poultry Farming Conference. The conference has provided training for over 1500 attendees from more than 40 countries in the past four years.
This year’s conference is co-sponsored by UGA Institute for Integrative Precision Agriculture. The event is free for student participants, but registration is required.

Dr. Kenon Song, IIPA member and associate professor in the UGA College of Engineering, is one of eight UGA researchers named as 2025 NAI Senior Members.
NAI Senior Members are distinguished faculty, scientists and administrators who have demonstrated success in patents, licensing and commercialization. They develop technologies that have made, or have the potential to make, meaningful impacts on society.

The summer REEU program titled “Modern Tools and Technologies for Food & Agriculture Production” is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in research, extension and outreach projects that focus on innovative tools and modern technologies for agricultural and food production. Students will also get opportunities for professional skills development in communication, leadership, ethics, team work and organization.
